Photos and video

Adding, ordering and removing a listing's photos and video, and what the app does to them before they go up

LS-2ListingsAll sections ↓

A listing's photos and video are what sell it. The first one is the cover: what people see in the list, marked COVER in the form. The site shows them all in the order you set.

Reading a listing

A listing you open (not its form) shows the cover large across the top, at its own shape: nothing is cut off, and a tall picture stops at a comfortable height. Under it, one row of small pictures holds every other photo and video, in order; a video has a ▶ on it. When there are more than fit, the row is cut at the edge: swipe it sideways (on the Mac, swipe with two fingers on the trackpad, or turn the mouse wheel over it). A listing with one photo shows just the cover. To reorder or remove photos, open the form (Edit), which shows them all as a grid.

Adding, ordering and removing

In a listing's form (Edit, the pencil), under Photos and video:

  • Take a Photo… uses the camera (iPhone and iPad). Add from Photos… picks photos and video from your library, up to 40 at a time. Add from Files… picks them from Files or the Finder. You can also drag them in from the Finder or Photos (or, on the iPad, from Photos or another app). See Drag and drop (MAC-3).
  • Photos are made ready on the device (Preparing photos…); a video is compressed first (Compressing video…).
  • Drag a photo onto another to move it there. The first one is the cover.
  • Touch and hold a photo (right-click on the Mac) for Make Cover or Remove.
  • To remove several at once, choose Select… (under the add rows, or in a photo's menu), tap or click the ones to remove, then Remove. Done Selecting leaves without removing anything. Like every change in the form, the removal reaches the site only when you publish; ✕ puts them all back.

Nothing changes on the site until you publish the listing with the check mark.

Seeing them full size

Click a photo or video (tap it on the iPhone and iPad), in a listing you are reading (the cover or any picture in the row under it) or in its form, to see it full size. On the Mac it covers the window; on the iPhone and iPad, the screen. It shows all of the listing's photos and video in their order, with 3 of 12 at the bottom:

  • ← and →, the arrows at the top, or a swipe sideways move to the previous or next one.
  • Pinch, or a double tap, zooms a photo; drag to look around. On the Mac, ⌘+, ⌘− and ⌘0 (actual size) work too.
  • A video plays where it stands, and stops when you move on.
  • Esc, the ✕, or a swipe down (iPhone and iPad) closes it.

In the form a click opens the photo and a drag still moves it, so ordering works as before.

What the app does before anything goes up

  • Photos are saved in three sizes, at most 1,600 pixels on the long side. A smaller photo is never enlarged.
  • Location and other hidden details are removed from every photo and video before it leaves your device.
  • Video is compressed to 720p, which every browser plays, with a still frame for its poster. One video can be up to about five minutes; a longer one is refused with trim it to a few minutes and try again.
  • Nothing is cropped. Each photo is kept whole, as you took it. A layout may show it cut to a shape on the site, but changing the layout never loses any of the picture. See Cards and Gallery layouts (ST-4).

Good photos

A plain, honest photo of the real thing works best. The app never adds detail, changes a background or "enhances" a picture. See Photos and honest pictures (PR-2).
